Today I’m happy to welcome a member of the Write Tribe blog community and one who I admire for her creativity and for following her passion of travelling. Both of these are reflected in her blogging style. Welcome, Shalini Baisiwala, to writing for Write Tribe. I hope this will be the start of many more posts from you.

Importance of Niche Blogging
When I started out blogging, my idea was to write about the city of Bangalore and my life out there. I wrote without any clue about SEO, traffic, etc and wrote about everything under the sun. My readers were few and far between. This went on for a few years till I joined some online blogging community. That’s when what blogging is all about hit me in a huge way. I revamped my entire blog and blogging style though I still continued to write about anything and everything.
After a while, I grew bored of my own blog. Especially when I flipped back to read older posts. The feeling of losing my way hit me and I started to re-evaluate why I was blogging.
A re-look at my blog showed me that some blog posts got more traction than others. Topics like travel and books got maximum readership on my blog. It seems people responded to my style of doing book reviews and loved my book selections. Another set loved the way I traveled and wrote about it. And I loved my conversations with the readers on these two subjects.
That was it. I narrowed down on these two topics and have been working on re-configuring my blog along this course for a while now. It’s still a WIP and will take another six months before it settles into this avatar.
Why does niche blogging appeal to me?
You can see from my experience that I lend major credence to niche blogging for my blog. The reason that settling into a niche works, according to me, is that one cannot write to please everyone. It’s like being the Jack of all trades, master of none which is a futile exercise in my opinion.
People come to the internet to find answers, to search for options and see what are the new trends, etc. Niche blogging is the power to harness this curiosity to work in favour of your writing.
One is more likely to check out a Fashion blog if one is looking for answers on latest clothing trends than check out a blog that writes about everything.
Brands and marketers will also flock to a blog related to their product than a general one. This is because such a blog will have a dedicated set of readers and followers whom they can tap into to sell their products to.
This is one of the biggest draw of niche blogging – it lets you become the expert in your chosen niche and narrows down your readership. Your opinion on that topic will be valued more and over time you will develop a loyal following.
Once you get a set audience, you can plan to build your writing around them to cater to their questions. This will lead to a better planning on what to write about, when to write and how to write on it. So now you can devise a blogging calendar and do monthly themes on your chosen niche. This will ensure great content that will appeal to your readers because of the coherence of thought in the writings.
Once again, brand tie ups will follow and one can do affiliate marketing based on the post topics. Say as a travel blogger, you are writing about weekend trips around your city in this current month, then it makes sense to do tie-ups with some of the home stay/ hotels in these places. Your content is supported by valuable information for the readers while at the same time the brand also finds profit sense in associating with you at this time.
Over time, your readers will start to come back again and again as the content is more driven to suit their needs and at the right time.
How to decide your niche?
Tap into your thought process and hobbies to see what appeals to you. What are you most comfortable writing / talking about? There is always some amount of research involved in writing an article, but most of it comes from the heart. That’s the only way it connects with readers.
Once you find some answers, analyse the internet scenario to see how well these fit into the scheme of things. Chances are there will be thousands of blogs with similar niche that you have settled in. Don’t despair, specialise by diversifying into other aspects of the niche.
For example, its fashion you wish you write about; think about writing from a certain angle or age group or gender or even pick a fashion trend to talk about that appeals to your personally.
The key is to own your niche like you are the boss. This can only happen when you are writing about something that you are very passionate about. Otherwise after a while monotony will set in and you might face writer’s block or worse a burnout.
You know the saying “Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life!” That’s at the crux of writing a blog. So go out there and own your niche and write like you mean it.
“You gotta keep trying to find your niche and trying to fit into whatever slot is left for you or to make one of your own ” – Dolly Parton
