You will never be short of ideas, if you take your writing ideas from daily life.
It’s hard to suffer from writer’s block when life is so full of things that are write-worthy! Seriously, if I made a note (and I try in my writer’s notebook) of all the writing fodder from daily life and actually wrote about it, I’d have a lot more writing to show.
However, if you feel that’s not working for you, here a few writing ideas from daily life – some exercise you might want to try:
1. Walk down memory lane and start writing about your own life.
There’s no better fodder for your writing than your own life. Get your passion and feelings down on paper. Write about your childhood memories – your favourite games, things that made you cry, funny incidents, your childhood dreams.
2. Take up a newspaper or a magazine (hard copies or online) and select a story.
Read it halfway through and then write the rest of it yourself adding fact or fiction to make it more interesting.
3. Listen in on conversations
Restaurants, coffee shops and stores provide you with plenty of opportunities to eavesdrop! Take one conversation and make a background story to it or write an imaginary ending to it. It’s totally up to you to make it serious or ridiculous.
4. Write about people you encounter in your daily routine
There are so many people we meet regularly – people we might say hello to even though we don’t know them, or people who serve us – the milkman, the newspaper boy, etc. Write about them. I know Parul does that regularly in her #WomenAtWork series or in a post like this one – I Know Her From My Morning Walks. Nabanita wrote a lovely post earlier this week about all the kind people she meets on her way to and from work.
Ideas abound, we just have to look for them and as I’ve shared even that’s not hard to do!
I try to write down and make a note of ideas that I cross paths with on a day-to-day basis, whether it be a conversation or something I hear on the radio, seeing a movie, or just thoughts in my head as I’m walking down the street. – Sam Hunt
