Let’s face it. Blogging is hard. You got to toggle between being a writer, social media enthusiast, photographer and a designer. Words do help in conveying the ideas behind a post but it’s definitely the pictures that say a thousand words. It grabs your reader’s attention. Have you ever wondered how some bloggers come up with stunning graphic designs, especially the photo collages? Creative genius, I would say. However, you needn’t be a professional designer or have in-depth knowledge in Photoshop to create these. Here’s how.
There are many free apps and tools these days to create juicy images to anchor your reader’s attention to your blog post even before reading a single word of the text. The popular web-based tools include Fotojet, Picmonkey, and Visme. With over 11 million users already from just over 28 months of its existence, Canva is also one of the most sought after graphic design software to create and share killer images. By providing a wide array of tools, images, and fonts to choose from, Canva is a boon to those looking to create photo collages.
How to Create Photo Collages for your Blog using Canva
Photo collages are an effective way of sharing multiple images from a photography session. Be it a travelogue, recipe, review or a roundup post, these are eye-candy and encourage your readers into seeing more of your work.
So without further adoâ€¦.letâ€™s do this.Â Â Buckle your seatbelts.Â Â Itâ€™s about to get crazy.
Step 1: Choose a Template:Â First, sign up with Canva and choose a template that fits your style and need. Many are free and some paid. This step is the hardest part for me in this entire process of creating a photo collage. That is simply because there are zillions of templates to choose from, in Canva. Do not worry about the graphics or elements on your preferred template. These can be changed. I have chosen the ‘Winter Destinations’ template from below.
Step 2: Delete the Images: Once you’ve chosen the template, delete the default images.
Step 3: Choose or Upload Images of your choice: You can search the image in the search bar by giving keywords. I tried a few with ‘laptop’, ‘write’, and ‘work’. There may only be a handful of free images upon searching. Others could be either for the Pro version or are available for a cost of $1. Therefore, I checked out few free stock images online and uploaded them onto Canva.
Step 4: Play around with Graphic Components: Delete and play around with the graphic components by searching them in the Elements section. If you are not happy with the default designs, you can also find few stunning fonts under ‘Text’ icon. Drag and drop the text banners and you can customize the color, size, and transparency.
Step 5: Save and Share the Image: You can save your collage or any image which you’ve created in four formats – JPG, PNG, PDF- Standard and PDF- Print. However, to enable and download a PNG image with a transparent background you ought to have a Pro membership. You can also share the image on social media or anyone by typing in their email address.
Another interesting thing to do is the option of collaborating with a friend by sharing the link. You can find this under the ‘Share’ button. You also get to set permissions by giving a ‘view-only’ access or an ‘edit’ access.
I threw in some images to the Winter Destinations template, changed the color and this is the end result! How does it look after changing to my own text and colors?
Personally, I find Canva much easier to use because of the inbuilt templates. They give a professional touch to the images for free! I also use it for creating stunning photo collages for any special occasion in life, be it family holidays, birthdays or anniversaries.
